We all at this point or at least most of us know what LCDs (Liquid Crystal Display) are and many of us actually own them. Whether or not they are for our computer or for home theater, LCDs are all over our houses and in our lives. So what is next…what is the future of this technology? Is it OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display, or maybe huge 100″ TVs or possibly LCD displays on our watches? Or maybe its flexible displays without solid form……like from the Red planet???
Now you may be completely confused by my title, but that is not surprising. Several years ago a movie was released starring Val Kilmer called Red Planet. The basic premise of this movie is that the earth has finally depleted its natural resources and now Mars was our last hope after years of trying to implant plants so that the atmosphere could become livable. Well anyways, the movie is set in the future the year 2050 so the gadgets that they use are pretty cool.
The particular object I want to talk about is the retractable flexible display they use once they reach Mars.

Now take a close look at this thing. It folds into the bar on the side and is flexible enough to move around yet still display what is needed. Now this one obviously looks a bit more complicated and obviously fake….but it does look very similar to this:

This Samsung “Flexible” display was being shown at the Sdium Tour in Korea at the Samsung booth called “Future Display and Future Energy“. While this new technology is not in any kind of real production yet it is a great idea and something really worth looking forward too. You can also scroll up and down the website to see the other displays that they are showcasing at the show. I think it is really exciting to see these advances even if just in the testing stage!
Flying cars are so next!!
